Concerns to be Heard
April 10 Public Meeting to
Discuss Cutbacks at Ajax-Pickering Hospital
The public will at last
have its chance to be heard about cutback plans of the RVHS
system at a public meeting scheduled for the HMS Ajax Room
at the Ajax Community Centre at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April
10.
"It is urgent
that the public be there and express their opposition to
this attack on the community's most vulnerable citizens",
said Bill Parish, Friends co-chair.
"A strong public
outcry is vital or we lose this fight. If Mental Health
Services go, what is next- Obstetrics and Paediatrics?",
Parish asked.
"I know it's short
notice so every concerned citizen should let his neighbour
know and plan to attend. I can't emphasize enough the
importance of a strong public outcry over this stripping of
our community services", Mr. Parish stated.
The Friends feel that
people of Ajax, Pickering and Whitby suffering with mental
illness are entitled to access a full range of core Mental
Health Services locally at Ajax Pickering. Mental health is
a basic local core community hospital service.
As part of a deficit
reduction plan, the RVHS is planning to move 20 in-patient
mental health beds from its Ajax-Pickering site to the
Centenary site in the near future.
The meeting was ordered by
the Central East LHIN when the Friends pointed out that the
RVHS Board was attempting to avoid being answerable to the
community about it budget slashing plans. LHIN policy and
legislation requires consultation beforehand.
Also proposed is the
cutting of over 200 jobs in the next three years.
